Jesus has a job for you to do.
In Matthew 5:13 He tells His disciples, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”
In his famous work The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, “It is to be noted that Jesus calls not himself, but his disciples the salt of the earth, for he entrusts his work on earth to them…But only as long as it remains salt and retains its cleansing and savoring properties can the salt preserve the earth.”
There are only two choices – to remain salt; in this case to genuinely follow Jesus and be His hands and feet in this broken world, or to lose the properties of Jesus in us and be good for nothing. Dietrich says, “The call of Jesus Christ means either that we are the salt of the earth, or else we are annihilated; either we follow the call or we are crushed beneath it. There is no question of a second chance.”
So, what is Jesus saying to you about how salty you are?
What can you do to stay salty?
Pray today for Jesus to not let you lose your saltiness. He’s given you a job to do and needs those salty properties to stay in tact so you have something to offer to the earth – Him.
